“What is it?” you mumble, refusing to open your eyes. It’s late, or early, depending on your point of view. The room is cold. The only reason you're awake is the spread has navigated south and your feet are freezing. Without feeling alongside you, you know he's from your side.
The bed shifts under his weight as he whispers, “nothing.” You can tell just by his tone of voice he wishes you would leave him alone and go back to sleep. It’s not the first time something like this has happened, where he’s awoken in the night, plagued by nightmares, but this is the first time you’ve gotten the sense he’d rather be anywhere but here. Your eyes snap open and you struggle for a moment, unsure of what to say, so you stare at his bare back, bruised blue by moonlight. The constellation there of small birthmarks draws your attention. Body reacting the way it always does at the sight of him naked, you fight the urge to kiss each one as you have more times than you can count.
Reaching out a hand towards him, you whisper, “tell me,” and then pull your hand away as his back ripples and goose pimples break out along his flesh.
“Don’t,” he whispers hoarsely, leaving the bed but not turning around to look at you. “Don’t touch me right now.”
Alarmed, you sit up and say his name softly. He doesn’t respond and panic wells in your chest. “What have I done?”
Finally he turns and the expression on his face makes you wish he hadn’t. You have yet to meet anyone with looks as cruel as Sirius Black. “Nothing, Moony. You’ve done nothing wrong.” He’s lying. You can smell it, especially this close after the full moon. “I’m worried about James, Lily and Harry.” This is true, you know. But why is he lying to you about the other?
“I’m worried too.”
“Are you? I wonder sometimes,” he says and before you can ask what he means, he’s grabbed his clothes and you’re left alone, at a loss to what just has happened.
